Salty, old and, perhaps, a sign of early life

Information technology's hard to believe today, but millions of eld ago the dusty New Mexico desert was covered by a shimmering sea. That water evaporated long since. But it left butt huge deposits of salt. Some of them contain tiny pockets of trapped ancient ocean water. This urine serves as super salty time capsules from an epoch before dinosaurs walked the Land.

Now, a team of scientists has found the oldest-known begotten molecules inside some of those main salt-water supply pockets. The team analyzed samples of salt mined deeply covert in southeastern New Mexico. They found molecules of cellulose. It's the strong, character-like mote that makes up plant cell walls. Algae and any bacterium also make cellulose. Because the molecule is ready-made away living organisms, its presence in the salt is attest that some kind of ancient organism had been around to pass.

Scientists base this ancient mat of diminutive, filamentlike cellulose fibers in 253-million-class-old salt deposits deep under the New North American nation desert. Each of the cellulose fibers, shown here through a microscope, measures between 5 and 16 nanometers (a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers wide).

To identify the cellulose molecules, the scientists removed material from interior the SALT-water pockets. They placed it in a hot bath  containing caustic soda and sodium borohydride. This harsh solution dissolves all known biological materials. Except cellulose. The material didn't dissolve what was in the salt. That tells the scientists that the fabric in the salt deposits most likely was cellulose.

As an additional step, the researchers also heterogenous the material with a cellulose-digesting enzyme. This prison term, the material quickly melted. Taken together, these results give strong support for the idea that the salt-water supply pockets contained cellulose.

The research team used radioactive dating to work out how old the salt crystals — and the cellulose inside of them — were. IT appears they formed more than 250 million eld ago. In all that time, the crystals have changed picayune.

These data tell the researchers that ancient salt deposits equivalent these might exist philosophical theory for preserving ancient molecules that serve Eastern Samoa signs of life. A gainsay to researchers looking for evidence of long-extinct living things is that the molecules that made up their bodies usually had broken behind already due to sunlight, wind, water supply or former living things that digested them.

But interred unfathomable at a lower place Earth's surface, the encased cellulose molecules in the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks-water pockets were fortified from the Sunday's harmful ultraviolet light radiation and unusual harsh conditions. Such conditions power be paragon places to look for signs of hourlong-gone life — both on World and on former planets.

Scientists in a playing area called astrobiology are especially interested in these sexagenarian cellulose molecules. Astrobiology is the study of life in the universe. Many scientists in this field are hunting ways to search for stiff of lifespan on some other planets. They're also looking for to answer questions about living in space: Does it exist now. Or did IT of all time exist in the former?

It's a good call into question, but one that's stony to answer. After all, where would you start looking on Mars if you wanted to look to signs of life? Arsenic information technology turns out, both Red Planet and Jupiter's moon Europa once had oceans — just like the New Mexico desert. Do they have similar salt deposits? No one knows. Merely if planets and moons perform, they might springiness scientists a good starting place to look for signs of past life.
